BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE TOGETHER

“Imagine,
A city without prejudice.
A city without poverty.
… A brand new shining city.”

That was the original vision of the Soul City founders. The Soul City Community Development Center (CDC) is a steward of this vision and will support making Soul City a “Shinning City”. It will accomplish this by:

  • 1. Creating sustainable food sources and agricultural production

  • 2. Manufacturing and providing sustainable living opportunities

  • 3. Developing vibrant and unifying community spaces

  • 4. Educating trade entrepreneurs

Sustainable Food Sources

We will set up commercial greenhouses that incorporate the most innovative agricultural practices. These modern, dome greenhouses will provide:

  • Locally grown and consumed food

  • Hands-on learning in sustainable agricultural practices

  • Opportunities for community members to become agricultural entrepreneurs

Sustainable Housing & Living Opportunities

Housing is becoming more unaffordable locally and nationwide. We plan to help locally and nationally by developing “tiny” homes and retrofitting existing structures and homes.

Specifically, we will:

  • Partner with a for-profit company to build innovative A-Frame tiny homes

  • Retrofit older homes for seniors

  • Create an Artisan Village that becomes a hub for creativity and craftsmanship

Vibrant & Unifying Community Spaces

We will create additional spaces for community fellowship and will work with the community on shared beautification projects.

The initial initiatives include:

  • Clearing land and cleaning common areas

  • Creating a community bazaar

  • Fund and coordinate a community Tree Planting Day

  • Renovating building 1: The Oasis @ Soul City

Trade Entrepreneurs

We will leverage each of the above initiatives to develop a local apprenticeship program (electric, plumbing, carpentry, healthy gardening, building renovation, etc). We will also teach business skills so that individuals can become trade entrepreneurs and have more control of their time and destiny. We have envisioned three tracks for our Trade Entrepreneur program:

  • HS student track - open to all HS students in Norlina

  • Switching careers track - open to any adult living in Norlina

  • Re-entry track - those who currently reside in (or recently released from) a local correctional facility
